DELTA – Rideau Lakes Township voters in 2018 will likely be picking one fewer member for council.
Councillors voted Tuesday to reduce the number of seats by one – trimming the council size to eight councillors from nine.
That council seat is for Ward 5: Newboro, which will be rolled into the neighbouring ward of North Crosby and will be called North Crosby-Newboro.
The proposal still has to go through a public appeal period, where a constituent could challenge the council change to the Ontario Municipal Board over the next 45 days.
The change was made over a perceived imbalance of representation, which could have been challenged based on a Supreme Court decision in 1991.
Rideau Lakes was amalgamated in 1998 and the five ward system set up – which will be four wards (two councillors for each ward) after the next municipal election is all goes according to plan.
