Clark: PST rebate won’t solve underlying hydro problems

BROCKVILLE – Local MPP Steve Clark believes a partial tax rebate on hydro won’t solve the underlying issues with Ontario’s electricity system.

The member for Leeds-Grenville sounded off following the Throne Speech Monday that announced a rebate equal to the provincial portion of the HST on electricity bills starting in January.

There’s also a promise for further rebates up about $45 a month for rural ratepayers.

Clark chastised the Liberal government for turning its back on his pleas on behalf of families and businesses dealing with skyrocketing hydro bills.

“Now that they’ve (the government) suffered a humiliating by-election loss, they suddenly realize there’s a problem?” Clark questioned.

Clark also notes that the rebate starts the same day the carbon tax is implemented, calling the whole plan “more smoke and mirrors.”

The MPP said hydro bills will keep going higher and higher until the government stops signing hydro contracts that are not affordable.
