SIU probing man hurt at Athens home

ATHENS – A man has been serious injured while police were trying to arrest him late Saturday night at a home near here.

As a result, the province’s Special Investigations Unit has been called in to investigate.

Ontario SIU spokesman Jason Gennaro told Brockville Newswatch, officers went into the home in Athens after responding “to an earlier incident.”

This happened around 11:30 p.m. Saturday night (Aug. 27).

By the early morning hours of Sunday (Aug. 28), a 66-year-old man was taken to hospital with serious injuries.

No other details of exactly what transpired have been released by the SIU nor the O.P.P.

The SIU has assigned three investigators and one forensic investigator to probe the case.

A news release from Leeds County O.P.P. suggests the man was already injured when officers found him.

His injuries are considered non-life threatening.

The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) is an independent body that investigates cases involving police where death, serious injury or a sexual assault has taken place. The SIU does have the power to lay criminal charges.
