CARDINAL – Holiday weekend traffic was delayed and met with a huge mess on Friday morning after a crash on Highway 401 involving two tractor-trailers.

The crash happened around 7 a.m., east of the Highway 416 interchange, according to tweets from Ontario Provincial Police and 511 Ontario.

O.P.P. East Region spokesman Bill Dickson told Brockville Newswatch the first tractor-trailer went in the median overnight before this morning’s crash.

“Two additional transports collided with each other in the westbound lanes. No injuries as far as we know. It’s just a matter of getting things cleaned,” Dickson told BNW.

He said the truck in the median could have been a distraction in the crash. “That’s a possibility but we can’t say for sure at this point. That will be part of the investigation.”

The force of the collision sliced one of the box trucks open. The other truck landed in the north ditch of the highway.

There were no reported injuries.

The westbound lanes of the highway were down to one lane late this morning (Friday) and may be closed briefly at some point to facilitate the cleanup. Eastbound traffic was unaffected.
