PORTLAND – The bodies of two men, presumed drowned, have been pulled from Big Rideau Lake.
They have been identified by both the O.P.P. and the township’s mayor as township councillor Doug Good and Mike Carty.
Rideau Lakes Township Mayor Ron Holman posted the following on the township’s Facebook page Sunday night:
“The Township’s Council and staff and the wider Rideau Lakes community are shocked and deeply saddened by the untimely loss of Councillor Doug Good and Mike Carty. They were both dedicated community champions, both greatly respected by their peers and neighbours. Our thoughts and prayers go out to their family and friends at this difficult time,” Holman wrote.
O.P.P. divers were called in to comb the area of Cow Island on Big Rideau Lake, east of Portland, after the two men were overdue to come home.
They were last seen at 8 a.m. Friday, police said.
Good and Carty, both from the Portland area, were together in a truck that is believed to have gone through the ice.
Their bodies were recovered Sunday night.
Good, a first term councillor for the Bastard & South Burgess ward, was 69 years old and Carty was 72 years old.
