ELGIN – A teenager from southwestern Ontario is presumed to have drowned in a lake in Rideau Lakes Township.
Emergency crews were called to Lower Beverley Lake, southeast of Elgin, just before 2 p.m. Tuesday.
A swimmer had slipped below the surface of the water and had not come up, police said.
Divers pulled the 19-year-old man from Windsor, Ont. from the water and he was taken to hospital in Brockville by ambulance.
Leeds County O.P.P. Const. Judy King told Brockville Newswatch a neighbouring cottager had called police about the teen, who was also staying at a cottage on the lake.
“My understanding is they were visiting a cottage in that area,” King told BNW.
A coordinated shutdown of intersections along County Roads 42 and 29 into Brockville drew the curiosity of people in the area.
King said the shutdown was done so “the ambulance could get through as safely and quickly as possible to get this 19-year-old male to hospital.”
However, the man was pronounced dead at Brockville General Hospital.
An autopsy is being performed today to confirm the cause of death.
