LEEDS-GRENVILLE – Provincial police have ticketed 21 boaters for various offences during a two day blitz on the St. Lawrence and Rideau Rivers.
The enforcement by the O.P.P. East Region Marine Team was carried out last Friday and Saturday (June 24-25, 2016).
Officers checked 58 vessels and issued 21 tickets for breaking various liquor and Canada Shipping Act laws.
Seven boaters, who had a little too much to drink, found themselves with three day driver’s licence suspensions.
Police are reminding boaters that drinking is only allowed on boats that have sleeping, cooking and washroom facilities that are anchored or docked.
Leeds County O.P.P. Staff Sergeant Jason Butcher calls the numbers “impressive” from an enforcement standpoint but “disconcerting” when people are not obeying the laws on the water.
