MALLORYTOWN – The westbound lanes of Highway 401 reopened around 5 p.m. Saturday afternoon – more than 12 hours after a collision involving two transport trucks.

The two drivers were taken to hospital after the crash on the freeway, west of the County Road 5 overpass.

The crash happened early Saturday morning around 4 a.m.

The force of the collision sliced open one of the rigs carrying Canada Post mail and packages, which were strewn about the highway.

Canada Post employees were on the scene later in the day retrieving the packages and letters from the asphalt and ditches.

Westbound traffic was detoured throughout the day.

The extent of the drivers’ injuries is unknown.
