High pressure CRA scam targeting Brockville: police

(Newswatch Group/File)

BROCKVILLE – A high pressure Canada Revenue Agency scam appears to be making the rounds of the city.

A resident complained to police Wednesday saying he had received a call from a person with a heavy accent identifying themselves as being from CRA.

The victim was told that if he didn’t make a $5,000 payment for back taxes, a arrest warrant would be issued and he could be fined $75,000 and thrown in jail for five years.

Brockville police said the caller even left a return phone number which was answered by the fraudster.

You are being advised not to respond to these types of calls and to check with Revenue Canada on ways to protect yourself.
