Here are the latest local, regional and national headlines on the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) for Tuesday, November 23, 2021:
- There have been 612,318 confirmed cases of COVID-19 across Ontario, an increase of 627 cases from the previous day (VAX: 282 unvaccinated, 23 partially vaccinated, 286 fully vaccinated, 36 unknown). There have been 596,753 people recovered from the virus while 9,968 have died. The number of Ontario people tested is 19,555,074 of which 6,489 have pending results.
- Canada’s coronavirus case total is 1,770,102. The country has 29,526 deaths from the virus – 12 in the Yukon, 12 in the Northwest Territories, four in Nunavut, 2,303 in British Columbia, 3,217 in Alberta, 912 in Saskatchewan, 1,292 in Manitoba, 9,968 in Ontario, 11,560 in Quebec, 122 in New Brunswick, 17 in Newfoundland & Labrador and 107 in Nova Scotia.
- The Leeds, Grenville and Lanark District Health Unit added 21 cases over the weekend to bring the regional total Monday to 2,051 confirmed cases, of which 41 are active (five more than Friday) and 1,946 are recovered (16 more than Friday). The number of deaths to date is 64. There are three people in hospital and one in the ICU (no change from Friday). There are no active institutional outbreaks. The community case breakdown is: Lanark County East 446 cases (one active), Lanark County West 470 cases (18 active), Leeds-Grenville Central 254 cases (six active), Leeds-Grenville East 410 cases (five active), Leeds-Grenville West 237 cases (11 active) and Unknown/Out of Region 27 cases (zero active).
- The Eastern Ontario Health Unit added 24 cases Monday from the weekend – one was removed from Prescott-Russell and 12 were added in SD&G and 13 in Cornwall – to bring the regional total to 5,998 confirmed cases, of which 84 are active (12 more than Friday) and 5,783 are resolved (12 more than Friday). The number of deaths to date is 131. There is one person in hospital and zero in the ICU (no change from Friday). There is one institutional outbreak (no change from Friday). Testing increased 256 to 171,475. The breakdown of cases is: Prescott-Russell 2,281 cases (eight active), SD&G 1,391 cases (24 active), Cornwall 1,813 cases (33 active) and Akwesasne (ON/QC) 513 cases (19 active)(Akwesasne health department report as of Thursday: 522 total cases, 23 active, nine deaths to date).
- Vaccines: Ontario 22,809,355 (+6,488, last update Nov. 22); EOHU 335,706 (last update Nov. 22, +438 from previous update Nov. 19); LGL 151,329 individuals living in LGL with first doses, 147,313 with second doses, 3,982 with third doses. (last update Nov. 16, +316 first doses, +605 second doses, +690 third doses since previous update Nov. 9).
- The Leeds, Grenville and Lanark District Health Unit will start vaccinating young children, ages five to 11, on Friday. Parents could start booking appointments for their kids through the health unit system and the local call center, as of yesterday.
- The Eastern Ontario Health Unit is targeting Thursday to start giving COVID-19 shots to children ages five to 11. Booking for the 3,000 local appointments available will be on the provincial booking website at 8 a.m. this morning.
- New COVID-19 cases associated with Nationview Public School in South Mountain and Seaway District High School in Iroquois have been reported by the school board. Both schools are running normally.
- At least 15,000 appointments for children were made in Manitoba Monday in the first few hours as the province allowed booking for the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine.
- Protests at schools in Saskatchewan over COVID-19 are about to be banned. The province is introducing legislation to create a 50 meter buffer around schools. The measure would expire after two years. The education minister says it’s important that children don’t been threatened or scared while attending class.
- A vaccine policy at Disney is being paused for Florida-based employees due to new laws passed by the state about an employer’s power to require vaccination. The company says over 90 per cent of its Florida workers are fully vaccinated. Those that aren’t will have to be masked and be socially distant at work.
