Newswatch COVID-19 Digest: Tuesday November 16, 2021

Here are the latest local, regional and national headlines on the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) for Tuesday, November 16, 2021:

  • There have been 607,725 confirmed cases of COVID-19 across Ontario, an increase of 552 cases from the previous day (VAX: 286 unvaccinated, 23 partially vaccinated, 212 fully vaccinated, 31 unknown). There have been 592,803 people recovered from the virus while 9,937 have died. The number of Ontario people tested is 19,362,827 of which 6,576 have pending results.
  • Canada’s coronavirus case total is 1,752,517. The country has 29,384 deaths from the virus – 11 in the Yukon, 12 in the Northwest Territories, four in Nunavut, 2,273 in British Columbia, 3,188 in Alberta, 896 in Saskatchewan, 1,273 in Manitoba, 9,937 in Ontario, 11,546 in Quebec, 122 in New Brunswick, 17 in Newfoundland & Labrador and 105 in Nova Scotia.
  • The Leeds, Grenville and Lanark District Health Unit added 19 cases over the weekend to bring the regional total Monday to 2,003 confirmed cases, of which 34 are active (two more than Friday) and 1,905 are recovered (17 more than Friday). The number of deaths to date is 64. There are three people in hospital (one more than Friday). There are no active institutional outbreaks. The community case breakdown is: Lanark County East 445 cases (five active), Lanark County West 449 cases (six active), Leeds-Grenville Central 248 cases (six active), Leeds-Grenville East 405 cases (nine active), Leeds-Grenville West 224 cases (eight active) and Unknown/Out of Region 25 cases (zero active).
  • The Eastern Ontario Health Unit added 29 cases Monday – new cases were five in Prescott-Russell, three in SD&G and six in Cornwall – to bring the regional total to 5,929 confirmed cases, of which 66 are active (12 more than Friday) and 5,733 are resolved (17 more than Friday). Fifteen cases were added from Akwesasne as part of data catch-up. The number of deaths increased by one to 130. There are seven people in hospital (no change from Friday) and three in the ICU (one fewer than Friday). There is one institutional outbreak (two fewer than Friday). Testing increased 491 to 169,971. The breakdown of cases is: Prescott-Russell 2,279 cases (15 active), SD&G 1,366 cases (eight active), Cornwall 1,781 cases (22 active) and Akwesasne (ON/QC) 503 cases (21 active)(Akwesasne health department reported five new cases Monday: 508 total cases, 18 active, nine deaths to date).
  • Vaccines: Ontario 22,720,151 (+7,251, last update Nov. 15); EOHU 333,579 (last update Nov. 15, +785 from previous update Nov. 12); LGL 151,013 individuals living in LGL with first doses, 146,708 with second doses, 3,292 with third doses. (last update Nov. 9, +326 first doses, +618 second doses, +602 third doses since previous update Nov. 2).
  • The next three games for the NHL’s Ottawa Senators are postponed due to a COVID-19 outbreak. The league says games will be postponed through Saturday. Ten players have tested positive in the past week and a half.
  • The B.C. government is introducing legislation that would put a 20 meter buffer around hospitals, schools and coronavirus testing and vaccination centers to prevent what it calls “disruptive behaviour.”
  • As the federal government vaccine mandate took effect Monday, over 1,000 core public sector workers were set to go without pay. They are also unable to collect EI benefits. Those workers who have one shot have 10 weeks to get their second. Worker unions are already planning to file grievances.
  • Austria has implemented a country-wide lockdown for unvaccinated citizens as cases spike in the European country. The measure affects roughly two million Austrians, who will only be able to go to work or get groceries – or get vaccinated.
