ATHENS – A diesel spill from a tractor trailer forced the closure of a busy intersection in Athens Wednesday afternoon, the Ministry of Environment said.

Ministry spokesman Lindsay Davidson told Brockville Newswatch around 100 liters of diesel fuel spilled on the roadway from a saddle tank on the truck at Elgin Street and Main Street.

Staff from the Ministry of the Environment, Conservation and Parks and the Kingston Fire Department were on site. The county said its staff and the O.P.P. were also there.

“A clean up contractor was contracted and has begun cleanup work on an impacted nearby catchment basin,” Davidson told BNW.

The United Counties of Leeds and Grenville had to close the intersection at County Road 5, County Road 40 and County Road 42 for several hours Wednesday.

The intersection has since reopened.
