Canoeist dies on Opinicon Lake

ELGIN – A canoeist has died after a mishap on Opinicon Lake over the weekend.

The 65-year-old man had been reported overdue on Sunday night after he didn’t come back to his home on Davis Lock Road, west of Elgin.

Members of the O.P.P. marine unit, the O.P.P. SAVE team and a military search aircraft from CFB Trenton searched the water.

They found his body in the water around 3 a.m. today (Monday).

The man has been identified as James Armour of Rideau Lakes Township.

Leeds County O.P.P. say Armour was an experienced canoeist and was wearing a lifejacket.

An autopsy is being performed at Kingston General Hospital.

The O.P.P. is reminding people to wear a lifejacket, especially when the water is very cold this time of year.
