BROCKVILLE – A fraud case against a former western Leeds-Grenville fire chief has been delayed two weeks.

Gerry Bennett, 60, is charged with 15 counts of fraud, six counts of uttering a forged document, three counts of theft and one count of breach of trust.

The case was heard in a Brockville court on Friday (Jan. 4) but Bennett’s lawyer, Josh Clarke, needed more time to go over the prosecution’s evidence.

Bennett was charged after a two year police investigation into problems with the municipal books in Gananoque and the Township of Leeds and Thousand Islands as well as the Gananoque Firefighter’s Association.

Bennett was let go as the town-township fire chief in November 2016.

The matter will be back in court Jan. 18.
