BROCKVILLE – The operator of the Brockville Mental Health Center has been fined after a nurse was stabbed in 2014.

The Royal Ottawa Health Care Group has to pay $75,000 in relation to the attack three years ago that left the health care worker with critical injuries. On top of the fine, there’s an $18,750 victim fine surcharge (25 per cent).

The fine was levelled in the Ontario Court of Justice in Brockville today (Aug. 16).

The employee was supervising a patient in the Oxford Avenue building’s Forensic Treatment Unit in October 2014 when they were stabbed with a pen multiple times while escorting the patient from a washroom.

Court heard the incident was one of a series of assaults that took place between August and October 2014 and that the operator failed to reassess the risk of violence in the workplace.

Failing to reassess workplace violence risk is a violation of the Occupational Health and Safety Act.
