Horse tumbles from trailer; driver charged

PRESCOTT – A driver has been charged after a horse fell out of a trailer on Highway 401 near here Friday afternoon.

The mishap occurred in the eastbound lanes near Edward Street where Grenville County O.P.P. officers found an injured horse lying on the roadway.

“Traffic was stopped and motorists were assisting the animal. (Our) investigation found that the horse had fallen out of an insecure door at the rear of the livestock trailer, which continued eastbound without stopping,” the O.P.P. said in a release.

Officers were able to track down the truck and trailer and escort it back to the scene.

A 61-year-old man from Alfred, Ont. has been charged with having an insecure load.

The horse was loaded back on the trailer and taken to a vet for examination and care.

The humane society and the Canadian Food Inspection Agency are also conducted their own investigations, the O.P.P. said.
