JOYCEVILLE – A fiery pileup on Highway 401, about 30 kilometers west of Gananoque, has killed four people, O.P.P. said Thursday morning.
The crash happened just after 1 a.m. in the westbound lanes and involved seven vehicles – four tractor trailers, an armoured truck and two passenger vehicles, west of Joyceville Road.
Members of the Frontenac, Leeds County and Napanee O.P.P. detachments are on scene, helping the Frontenac Fire Department. Members of Frontenac County EMS and Leeds-Grenville EMS were also on scene.
One of the passenger vehicles burst into flames and was “fully engulfed with fire.”
Four people in the vehicle that caught fire have died, police said.
Two people in the other vehicles involved have been rushed to hospital and are last listed in serious condition.
No names are being released until relatives are notified.
An O.P.P. collision investigation team is on site.
All lanes of the highway were closed overnight and a detour was in place via Highway 15. The eastbound lanes are back open.
