KEMPTVILLE – The Upper Canada District School Board has voted 8-3 Thursday night to close eight schools across the region and another four, conditional on funding.
The first vote of 8-3 will see eight Eastern Ontario schools close.
Those include Benson Public School (Edwardsburgh-Cardinal) and Rideau Centennial Elementary School (Portland) by this September and Prince of Wales Public School (Brockville), Wolford Public School (Merrickville-Wolford) and Oxford-on-Rideau Public School (North Grenville) by September 2018.
In Oxford’s case, it would be subject to making space available at South Branch Elementary School.
Trustees later voted 8-3 to approve the four schools for closure subject to provincial funding.
Those include Maynard Public School in Prescott (subject to an addition on Wellington Elementary School) and Toniata Public School in Brockville (subject to a new elementary school which would consolidate Commonwealth Public School and Prince of Wales Public School).
A number of amendments were put forward to try and remove some schools from the list, but those motions were defeated.
