BROCKVILLE – A man has his two children were able to escape their car before a freight train smashed into it at a level crossing in the city Tuesday.

The 56-year-old driver had got his vehicle stuck at the Bartholomew Street crossing around 9 a.m. after the car was caught on clumps of snow and ice.

The man was reportedly taking his two children to Commonwealth Public School at the time.

After he was unable to get the car dislodged, the man and his children got out of the vehicle after hearing an approaching train.

The train smashed into the vehicle, destroying it and sending it off the tracks where it landed a few meters from the crossing.

The accident blocked crossings at three other points in the city while the mess was cleaned up.
