Park Street fire deliberately set: police

BROCKVILLE – An apartment fire on Park Street Wednesday was deliberately set, city police have determined.

Firefighters, Leeds-Grenville EMS and Brockville police were called around 10:30 a.m. Wednesday or a fire in an apartment complex at 226 Park Street.

Police say a 51-year-old man – a tenant in the building – has been charged with arson and assaulting a police officer.

The man, whose name was not released, is accused of spitting in an officer’s face while he was being questioned.

The building has extensive damage and it appears to have started in the apartment of the accused, police said.

The local branch of the Canadian Red Cross and Victim Services Leeds and Grenville is helping the tenants with housing.
