MORRISBURG – A group of people near the water who rescued a pilot after his plane crash-landed in the St. Lawrence River have been honoured by the township.
Lifeguards Dylan Picotte, Maiah Horne, Quinn Horne and Sophia Currier were given certificates of courage by South Dundas council during its regular council meeting Tuesday night.
Nearby boater Clare Tatton, who was the first to the scene, was also recognized for his actions in working with the lifeguards to get the pilot to shore.
Tatton also towed the plane to the riverbank.
The certificates, presented by South Dundas Mayor Evonne Delegarde, recognize the “recognition and appreciation of the courage and decisive action demonstration on August 8, 2016.”
The small plane lost power during a landing attempt land at the Iroquois airport, forcing the pilot to crash-land the plane in the water, west of the Iroquois beach.
The pilot was not injured.
