BROCKVILLE – City police say they were forced to taser an suicidal man after he didn’t obey several demands to drop a knife.

Police were called to a south-end home around 3 a.m. Thursday where a 90-year-old man had wanted to kill himself with a handgun.

He wasn’t able to carry out his plan because he wasn’t able to remove a trigger lock, police said.

But things escalated quickly when the man’s son showed and his father now had a knife and was threatening him.

“Officers gave several demands of the man to drop the knife and were concerned due to his close proximity to his family member,” Staff Sgt. Todd Bertrend said in a statement. “After requests to drop the knife were ignored, officers deployed a…taser and this allowed them to move in and take control of the man and the weapon.”

The man, who suffered no injuries, was taken to hospital for a mental health evaluation.

He was later released into the care of his family, police said.
