Massive Smiths Falls fire displaces residents

SMITHS FALLS – Baskets and bags of clothing and other articles are piling up at a Chambers Street fitness studio in the wake of a massive row house fire Friday night.

At least 14 people (updated) are homeless after fire tore through the Robinson Avenue building around 11:15 p.m., reducing the structure to a two-storey shell without a roof.

Smiths Falls firefighters and ones from neighbouring departments battled the blaze through the night and some were still on the scene by daylight Saturday morning putting out hot spots.

There were no reported injuries to the residents or the emergency responders.

The cause of the fire is not known.

Investigators from the Ontario Fire Marshal’s office are on the scene today (Saturday).

The Smiths Falls “Together we CAN make a Difference” Facebook page is coordinating donations and a drop-off location has been set up at Zendragon on Chambers Street, next to Giant Tiger.

A Go Fund Me page has also been set up for the victims.
