BROCKVILLE – The Brockville General Hospital’s 1st Floor East inpatient unit is dealing with an outbreak of an intestinal illness.

While the unit isn’t closed to the public, people are being strongly encouraged to limit visiting people.

If you do visit, you’re asked to make sure to wash your hands before and after your visit.

According to the Ministry of Health, these illnesses normally cause diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, abdominal cramps and fever.

They are transmitted through ingesting contaminated water or food and can also be passed on through direct or indirect exposure to bodily fluids from an infected person.

An enteric outbreak is declared when three or more cases happen in a four day period, according to Ottawa Public Health criteria.
