KEMPTVILLE – The head of an “impressive grassroots story” in the Township of Athens is this year’s Bill Thake Memorial Economic Development Leadership Award winner.
George Tackaberry was given the award Friday afternoon at the Leeds-Grenville Economic Development Summit.
“For all the energy and enthusiasm George has put into his company, he has contributed equally to his community and its growth over the years,” County Warden David Gordon said.
The asphalt and quarry operator, G. Tackaberry and Sons Construction Company Ltd., has been in Athens since 1957.
The company has 60 full-time and 120 seasonal employees.
Warden Gordon said George Tackaberry shows unwavering philanthropy with over 250 community groups and schools supported each year.
Tackaberry also supports events like Corn Fest and the Athens Lions Club Farmersville Exhibition, also known as Steam Fair.
“Ongoing support of these events and organizations builds greater community spirit and paves the way (pun intended) to brings thousands of visitors into the community each year,” Gordon said.
The other nominees for the award were David Cybulski of Augusta Township and Bob Besharah of North Grenville.
