BROCKVILLE – The regional coroner for Eastern Ontario has announced a date for an inquest into the death of a man at the Brockville General Hospital.

James Gerald Hawley, 41, of Prescott died on May 26, 2008 after suffering from “significant, chronic medical conditions that substantially reduced his ability to care for himself,” said a statement from the coroner’s office.

Hawley had weighed 57 pounds when he was admitted to the hospital. Reports suggest he had significant mental and physical disabilities due to trauma from shaken baby syndrome.

His younger brother was found guilty in 2013 of manslaughter in connection to his death and was given a 20 year prison sentence.

The inquest still start Dec. 7 at the Brockville courthouse and is expected to last two weeks and will hear from 28 witnesses.

It will look into the circumstances around Hawley’s death, including “the legal framework and resources for care decisions in adults with diminished capacity.”

A jury will not assess blame, but make recommendations to avoid a similar tragedy.
