Freezie truck catches fire; damages Highway 401

BROCKVILLE – You could say it was a case of fire and ice on Highway 401 this morning (Wednesday) and it will be a headache for drivers most of the day because of it.

Leeds County O.P.P. say a tractor trailer full of “freezies” caught fire in the eastbound lanes, west of Brockville, around 1 a.m.

Traffic had to be stopped in both directions in order for firefighters to put out the truck fire.

The fire was so hot it melted the asphalt, not to mention the frozen snacks.

Police say the Ministry of Environment has also be called after a diesel spill from the truck.

O.P.P. say the eastbound lanes of the highway will be closed until 8 p.m. to allow crews to remove the burnt vehicle, fix the asphalt and have MOE do its investigation. Detours are in place at Long Beach Drive (County Road 2 exit).
