SMITHS FALLS – Investigators with the Ontario Fire Marshal’s office, town police and town fire departments are continuing their investigation today (May 8) into a deadly house fire.
The blaze started in a six unit apartment building at 80-82 Victoria Avenue shortly after 1:30 a.m. Monday.
Smiths Falls firefighters, aided by the Montague and Perth departments, battled the blaze.
One person was killed in the fire. “All other residents are accounted for and have been temporarily housed. The fire was contained to the third floor unit,” town police said.
The name of the victim has not been released.
The displaced residents are being helped by Lanark County Victim Services and the Red Cross.
Law enforcement is asking the public to steer clear of the fire scene.
