GANANOQUE – A missing hiker has been found safe and unharmed after getting lost near the Marble Rock Conservation Area, north of the town.

Leeds County O.P.P. were called around sunset on Monday (Dec. 4) by a hiker – a 51-year-old Gananoque woman – who had lost her way off Marble Rock Road.

Fortunately, the woman was carrying a cell phone at the time and was able to notify authorities.

After a five kilometer trek into the trails, police officers were able to escort her to safety.

This case underscores the need for hikers to be prepared before heading off the beaten path, police said.

They have shared these tips:

  • Always plan your route, bring maps, GPS and be prepared for adverse weather.
  • Leave information about your whereabouts on the dash of your car, having a charged cell phone, food, water and medical supplies.
  • Always let someone know where you are going and when you think you’ll be back.
  • Wear proper clothing and footwear, adding that attempting to navigate the trails in flip flops would be a very poor decision.
