Rideau Lakes by-election set for July

RIDEAU LAKES TOWNSHIP – A by-election will be held in July to replace a member of council who died in March.

Coun. Doug Good died in early March after a vehicle he was in went through the ice near Cow Island on Big Rideau Lake. His friend, Mike Carty, also died in the mishap.

The nomination period for the Bastard and South Burgess ward opened last Tuesday (April 25) and will be open until May 31 at 2 p.m.

Once the candidates are confirmed, there will be a 45 day campaign period with an advance poll on July 8 and Election Day on July 14 at the township office in Chantry.

Voting will be conducted by traditional ballot (no mail-in ballot or alternative voting methods).

This is the first time since its 1998 amalgamation that Rideau Lakes Township has filled a seat through a by-election.

There are roughly 10,200 people living in Rideau Lakes.
