BROCKVILLE – Police have made an arrest after several Brockville restaurants were duped out of money through a so-called “quick change scam.”
The perpetrator of the scheme asks for change for larger bills and does it several times in a quick fashion so as to confuse the employee.
“(It’s) kind of a shell game,” Staff Sgt. Todd Bertrend told Brockville Newswatch.
In this case, the suspect got away with anywhere from $75 to $98 each time from several restaurants in the city, including the Tim Hortons on Jefferson Drive and the McDonald’s in Walmart on Parkedale Avenue.
After putting out a still image from security footage at one of the eateries, Brockville police announced Monday they had arrested a 28-year-old man from Atlantic Canada.
“He had been working out west for a number of years and was returning home when he was caught for his crimes,” police said.
The man, who was not identified, appeared in a Brockville bail court Monday to answer to five charges of fraud and possession of property obtained by crime.
