CORNWALL, Ont. – The St. Lawrence Seaway has opened for its 58th season.

The Canada Steamship Lines’ Thunder Bay went through the Welland Canal this morning (Monday), carrying a load of road salt.

The seaway is opening almost two weeks earlier than usual due to the warmer weather.

“A return to an opening in the third week of March provides our clients with the opportunity to move cargo in a timely manner, and make the most of the navigation season,” said St. Lawrence Seaway Management Corporation President Terence Bowles.

As for what’s in store for 2016, Bowles believes Canadian exports will happen more frequently with the lower Canadian dollar.

He also pointed to a rebound in Canadian manufacturing, a “solid” U.S. economy and possible trade avenues with Europe as possible catalysts for a boost to shipping this year.
