CORNWALL, Ont. – The bulk of shipments on the St. Lawrence Seaway are still lagging behind 2014 levels with a month to go.
Numbers released Thursday show 31,531 metric tons were delivered on the waterway as of the end of November.
That’s down nearly 11 per cent during the same period last year (35,214 metric tons in 2014).
The biggest drops were in coal (down 37 per cent) and general cargo (down 16 per cent).
Grain shipments, thought to be continuing a boom cycle from last year, are also down nearly 11 per cent over the 11 month period.
The number of ships is also down five per cent (179 transits) year over year.
Meanwhile, it’s a different story at the Port of Johnstown, where grain shipments are projected to increase 40 per cent year over year and 11 per cent in overall marine traffic.
