Facing shortfall, United Way campaign extended

BROCKVILLE – Facing a projected $225,000 shortfall, officials with the Leeds-Grenville United Way campaign have extended it until the end of the month.

Campaign chairman Terry O’Reilly said the shortfall is expected even though corporate donations from places, such as Proctor & Gamble, haven’t been announced.

The campaign, which was supposed to end on Friday last week (Dec. 4, 2015) has been extended to Dec. 31, 2015.

The United Way moved to a new campaign marketing model this year, basing its goal on “lives changed” rather than a dollar figure. The “lives changed” goal was 33,102.

O’Reilly and UW Executive Director Melissa Hillier believes the loss of major events like the 2015 Hockey Night in Leeds-Grenville, competing with other groups for donations and industrial sector cutbacks are to blame.

The board president also called it “exceptional circumstances” for the campaign lag.

The United Way helps 22 member agencies in the region.

It’s too early to determine what agencies may be affected if the goal isn’t reached, officials said.
